Let
us begin with some indisputable facts that are the outcome of numerous and
prolonged investigations of the Trump campaign by the press, the political
establishment and perhaps even intelligence agencies. There is no evidence of any
improper contact or collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian officials.
There is no evidence that the Russians hacked the election i.e. altered the
voting in any way causing Trump to win. There is no evidence that source of the
numerous WikiLeaks dumps were the Russians. It was not hacking but a phishing operation that compromised John Podesta’s emails.
However,
the above irrefutable facts do not stop the relentless ‘explosive’ and
‘exclusive’ breaking news stories on the Trump-Russia connection. Beyond the
sensational headlines, these are nothing more than random collection of speculations,
conjectures, presumptions, unprovable claims from unnamed sources, conspiracy
theories, with great deal of wishful thinking and projection. Once the story is
out in the public domain, the media and the political establishment carry the
baton for the next several days with more exaggerations, speculations and
projections.
The
frequent refrain is that this is the new ‘Watergate’. Going by those standards,
it has been eight months since the Russians angle is being investigated, at
this juncture during Watergate seven individuals were indicted, prosecuted and
sentenced. There was no dispute that it was indeed a scandal and it eventually
got Nixon out of the White House.
Press
any of these individuals who are pushing this angle of the ‘Russians did it’, and
they agree that there is no evidence, but they still want the investigation
continue since there never can be anything worse than a foreign entity having influence
over the elections or the highest office in the country. The same people showed
no interest in any investigation when the Clinton foundation received most of
its contributions from foreign entities when Hillary Clinton was Secretary of
State and then ran for President. They did not even utter a syllable when
President Barack Hussein Obama was caught on a hot mike telling Russian
President Dmitry Medvedev
that if given “space,” he’ll have more flexibility “after my election” for negotiations
on issues like missile defense. They did not seem concerned that the Democratic
Presidential primary was rigged to hand over the nomination to Hillary Clinton.
But we are expecting fairness cannot survive where hate lives.
The
‘Russians did it’ is not the only anti Trump story being pursued, there is also
the matter of Trump’s tax returns where they are certain lies deep dark and
dirty secrets. A fairly recent ploy is to question Trump’s mental health. There are arbitrary and baseless
allegations of racism, sexism, homophobia, trans-phobia, and Islamophobia
continue to appear. Let’s not forget ‘comedians’ and fading celebrities chose
every occasion from award functions to ‘protest marches’ to relentlessly mock,
abuse, attack and insult the democratically elected President Trump. The
reaction to this crude, crass and pathetic display is plaudits galore with
headlines such as ‘XYZ destroys Donald Trump’ or ‘ABC offers a definitive take
down of Trump’.
The
definition of insanity is to do the exact same thing repeatedly with the expectation
of a different result. This is exactly where the anti-Trump brigade in the
media, political establishment, and government are right now –insanity driven
by inconsolable anger for not being able to influence the presidential vote. This
is not just hatred for Trump but his supporters as well. Their version of
democracy is, they give the public a list of pre-approved candidates from which
they expect you. While the public may think in terms of Republicans and
Democrats, they think in terms of insider and outsider. For them there is very
little difference between Hillary Clinton and a Jeb Bush as long as they are
pulling the strings. But elect somebody like Trump who they cannot control and
who is about to bring about changes that threatens their very existence they
unleash all they powers to destroy him.
The
best way to regain power would be to study why Trump got where he is and to
replicate it, to understand the unbreakable bond that Trump has developed with his
supporters that caused him to prevail where others perish. But instead they
keep firing at him thinking that they have the magic bullet that will bring him
down, but these bullets turns to blanks when they trach him. Inexplicably he
only gets stronger.
However,
there is a silver lining to all these vicious and relentless attacks. I was
talking with a colleague last week; she and her family voted for Hillary
Clinton, they are independents, not particularly political or ideological. She
and her family tuned into the much-hyped Rachel Maddow show about Trump’s tax
returns from 2005 expecting it to be earth-shattering. Instead, they got Ms.
Maddow bloviating for almost twenty minutes and then go through with her guest
speculating, projecting and conspiracy mongering. In the end, it was
proved that Trump had payed roughly $38 million in taxes on $150 million in
income that year. There was nothing wrong or illegal. My colleague
wondered why the real matter of illegality i.e. the manner in which the Tax
returns were acquired was not addressed. She concluded by saying that this ‘explosive’
story was the straw that broke the camel’s back and it helped her make up her
mind to never ever waste time-consuming news from mainstream channels because
of its unwillingness to move on. Despite not voting for Trump, she said it was
only fair to give Trump a chance. She said that she had expected Trump to pull
the usual politician tactic and turn away from his campaign promises upon being
elected. She also said she was rather impressed by Trump’s ability to convince
many manufacturing units to either build or stay back in the US, she said she
was pleased that Trump was making a genuine effort to save government money,
cut unnecessary spending and reduce the size of government. She noted that she
could not remember the last time a politician could ever pull this off despite
campaigning on them. She added that baseless allegations of bigotry
demeaned the seriousness of the issues and was a vile insult to real victim and
a free pass to real perpetrators. She said that all this had made Trump was the
underdog in her eyes and that she wanted to root for
This
persistent and purposeless hounding is no different from the boy who cried
‘wolf’. Patience among fair-minded people will eventually be exhausted, if as
has not already been exhausted, as nobody likes to watch the same movie every
night where the plot has not moved an inch. For rabid Trump haters who have
been promised that the evidence of the Trump Russian connection is imminent
will soon be disappointment when nothing eventually turns up. For Trump
supporters this will only fortify their support, as this will view this as a
war on their choice.
The
way things stand now, Trump haters have been so blatant in their display of revulsion
that they have probably inoculated Trump from any consequences. Once again their
vicious attempts to destroy him will end up helping him.
