The Best Films and Performances of 2022

Star of the Year

Amitabh Bachchan

This great man delivered sterling performances in five films this year and had a guest appearance in one. The films didn't always match his talent yet he was spectacular. Many of his classics from the 70s and 80s were re-released in the cinemas and received a thunderous response from audiences all over India

Films of the Year

Jhund: A poignant tale of Vijay Barse, a retired sports teacher, forming a football team of slum-dwelling children in order to keep them away from drugs and crime. Beautifully directed with a flawless and restrained central performance by Amitabh Bachchan

Anek: A socio-political, action thriller set against the backdrop of Northeast India, an often overlooked part of India. The film revolves around a government police secret agent official sent to the Northeast region of India to bring a peace deal between the government and the separatist groups in the North East, who also want to break away from India.

Drishyam 2: An apt sequel that keeps the audience gripped and compelling all to suspend their disbelief.

Runway 34: A tight thriller that involves investigations about an airplane mishap. Terrific performances by Amitabh Bachchan, and ably acted and directed Ajay Devgan.

The Kashmir Files: Hard-hitting and heart-wrenching account of the pain, suffering, and struggle of the Kashmiri Pandit community in 1990 who suffered genocide at the hands of Islamic terrorists. I have been told by Kashmiri friends who were in Kashmir in 1990 that the depiction is accurate. This is beautifully directed and shot like a dark nightmare.

Top Gun: Maverick: A spectacular action picture that engages and entertains throughout with breathtaking visuals.
